Featured coffee – Delicious Peace

I’m taking a week off, but I wanted to stop by and let you know about a free webinar hosted by the AMA (American Medical Association) on telehealth, Return on Health: Valuing Digitally Enabled Care, on Wednesday, July 28 at noon CST.

Professional, Ethical, and Respectful

Okay, so I’m not sharing this to review guidelines because I’ve never found a reliable source indicating that we cannot code family, friends, or co-workers’ records.

If you have a source, please feel free to share.

I have worked in practices with internal policies that coders should give those records to another coder. However, I’ve also worked in organizations that have not created guidelines for those situations.

Do you have a policy?

As you know, the coding community is small.  So if you don’t know someone, chances are you know someone who does.

So, it’s not unusual to get a medical record of someone you know.

As professionals, we do not discuss medical information with anyone, not even the person whose records we are coding.

A coder told me that I looked younger than my age.  She had coded my visit at a local hospital.  It was flattering but very unprofessional.
