My Journey Began

During my first coding contract,   I received feedback from the coding auditor and I found true career goals.  I wanted to be an auditor. I wanted to teach other coders the way that I was taught that day.

Unfortunately, not everyone has positive experiences with audits.  Sometimes, we encounter auditors who identify our errors, but they are not willing or don’t have time to teach us.

When I began as a coder, coding schools did not exist.  A lot of us transitioned from medical billing to coding and learned on the job from more experienced coders. (More on this in a different post).

I met with the coding auditor because she completely failed me.  I appreciated the way that she presented the results to me and she taught me a lot.  We reviewed my coding, then she showed me how she coded the same note – E/Ms were definitely not my strength.  I started my coding career as a surgical/anesthesia coder and evaluation and management services were not priorities for surgeons.

Recognizing my weakness, I became committed to making it my strength.  I also walked away from that experience with so much respect for the auditor, and a personal commitment to treat coders with the same respect that I was given.
